As a contributor to the work of Garfield Classics,
I must say it was quiet an enjoyment on my part. Garfield is a well-known
character that is loved by all ages, and also one of my favorite childhood
character of all time.
The book Garfield Classics not only contains
the comic strip but also includes glossary of key terms that is focused to teach
children with vocabularies, quotes, description of famous and historical people
and more. When we started on this book we wanted to help the Korean children not
to only laugh and enjoy the book but to actually understand and learn about the
sarcastic characteristic of Garfield and the other characters, and also the
different messages they were trying to tell the readers. So, to make learning
simpler and convenient we got started on making the glossary. Throughout the
book, I pointed out words and quotes that would be difficult or even unfamiliar
to the Korean children and translated and made it simpler to understand. For
example, a saying such as “Spoil it for someone” or “Help yourself” would be
easily understood by English speakers but not to a beginning English learner.
Garfield might seem to some people as a simple children’s comic strip but it’s
actually quite insightful and challenging. As the reader’s go through the book
they can search and learn about the words they are confused about by looking at
the glossary on the back or in the page itself, which lists all the key terms.
Just because you know many words does not make you an expert of the English
language; you have to really understand where the words belong in a sentence and
also what it means in different situations. That is why we created the glossary
to teach children that not all vocabularies holds one meaning but many in
different situations and tones.
In conclusion, the book Garfield Classics is
filled with many words, sayings, expressions, and qualities that would be very
helpful and enjoyable for English learning children, which they will find it
useful and satisfying along their English learning experience.
