THE PRINCESS AND THE DRAGON

Scene 1 The Royal castle

(Princess walks on to the stage followed by the King and Queen)

Narrator: Once there was a Princess who didn't behave like a princess.

Princess: (Princess blows a raspberry)

Narrator: The King and Queen were shocked by her frightful manners!

(King, Queen and Princess sit down to dinner)

Princess: This is yummy! Slurp! Slurp!

(Princess has her face in a bowl and is slurping her soup. The King and Queen look very cross)

King & Queen: I can't believe what terrible manners our daughter has!

(King and Queen exit)

Narrator: Her tangled hair and ragged clothes made her Nanny cry.

Nanny: (Enter Nanny with hair brush)

Now dear, I think we had better tidy you up a little.

Princess: Don't touch me! I'm perfect.

Nanny: Oh Princess, you are so horrid to your poor Nanny.

Whatever will the King and Queen say? She's filthy!

I can't cope with this job any more!

(She leaves the stage crying)

Narrator: The Cook, try as he might, could never serve a meal the Princess liked.

Cook: (Cook brings on a tray with dinner. With a flourish he takes the lid off the food)

Spaghetti a la meatballs and chocolate peanut butter cake.

Princess: (Picks up food and throws it at the audience)

Throw it to the swine!

Narrator:No one ever saw her smile, except when she played a mean trick on the old knight.

(Knight walks on and lies down. He snores with mouth open)

Princess: (Giggling quietly and nastily. From behind her back she brings a worm and a mouse)

Eat up your nice worm!

(As the old Knight opens his mouth to snore the Princess tries to put the worm in his mouth. After several goes she manages it - the old Knight wakes up and starts screaming and flapping around in circles)

Narrator: (Narrator starts speaking and townspeople begin to walk on stage)

All the mothers and the fathers in the kingdom warned their children not to be like her.

Townspeople: (Dressed as mothers, fathers and children of the kingdom)

Don't act like her! She's a disgrace! Never, never! No! No! No! Isn't she terrible?

* song: She's a terrible Princess!!

She is a Princess. Terrible behavior!!!

She is a Princess. Frightful manners!!!

Tangled hair, ragged clothes!!! Oh, she's filthy!!!

Never smile, except a mean trick!!!

How terrible, what a shame!!!

Don't act like her, no, no, no!!!

She is not a Princess. NO WAY!!!

Narrator: However, one day an even bigger problem than a naughty princess in the kingdom.

Town crier: (Ringing bell. Keeps repeating phrases whilst moving around stage)

Oh yea, oh yea, shock, horror! Trouble in the mountains.

Big, green, fire-breathing dragon.

Townspeople: (Townspeople put their hands up in horror. Then they huddle as if frightened and 'walk to the castle' - stage left)

It's green! It's big! It's hungry! Help!

We must tell the King and Queen....

(King and Queen enter stage left carrying 'thrones' and sit regally. The old Knight stands guarding them)

Narrator: The mothers and fathers were very frightened and ran to the King and Queen for help.

Townspeople: (Mime telling King and Queen the bad news)

King & Queen: (Mime horror)

Narrator: The King and Queen were worried too.

King: It's come for our little dear!

Queen: Oh me!

Narrator: They knew that dragons liked to kidnap princesses. But most upset of all was the old Knight as it was his job to protect the royal child.

Old Knight: (Sighing) Oh my!

All: What's to be done? Oh dear! How terrible!

* song: The Dragon, oh my!

It's green! It's big! It's hungry!

What is that???

Big, green, hungry Dragon!!! What???

Trouble in the mountains, fire-breathing Dragon!!!

Dragons like to kidnap princesses.

It's a big problem. Dragon is here, (Oh no)!!!

We are very frightened. Oh, King help!!!

Oh dear, oh dear!! How terrible!!! HELP!!!

(All on stage rush off stage left except Princess)

Narrator: This news gave the Princess a mean idea.

Princess: Wouldn't it be jolly to watch the old Knight fight a dragon?

(Deep in thought)

I'm going to let that dragon capture me!

Narrator: That night, while everyone slept, the Princess tiptoed out of the palace and made her way up to the terrible creature's cave.

(The Princess gets out of bed and puts on her outdoor clothes and makes her way across the stage to stage right)

Scene 2 The Dragon's Cave

(Dragon walks on smiling sweetly, and settles itself down with music, as if about to play the piano)

Princess: (Sees Dragon and is very surprised)

Narrator: But inside she found a dragon daintily playing the piano.

Dragon: (In a very sweet voice) Oh hello, who are you?

Princess: (In a very fierce voice) I'm the Princess. Capture me!

Dragon: I wouldn't dream of it.

Narrator: The Dragon was not at all what the Princess expected.

The Princess thought dragons were fierce.

Princess: Don't dragons roar loudly, chase knights and kidnap princesses?

Dragon: The others do. I don't like to.

* song: I like to play the piano(behave like a Princess)!

I'm green! But not big! Not hungry!

Who am I???

Cute, sweet, dainty Dragon!!! (laughs)

Playing the piano, candle-light cave!!!

Behave like a Princess!!!

Behave like a Princess!!!

It's a big problem. I'm just a Dragon.

I want to be a Princess!!!

Narrator: This Dragon wasn't fierce at all.

Dragon: (Starts ballet dancing) Anyway, don't you take ballet, read good books and wear lovely gowns?

Princess: Not me. I hate it!

*song: Reprise of song 1 - Terrible Princess!

I'm a Princess. Slurp, slurp soup!!!

I'm a Princess. Throw ice-cream!!!

Tangled hair, ragged clothes!!! Oh, that's funny!!!

No hankie, no 'thank you'!!!

How easy, Lots of fun!!!

Don't bother me, no, no, no!!!

No disgusting tidy habits. NO WAY!!!

Narrator: The Dragon was just as surprised as the Princess, as it thought princesses were gentle.

(Princess and Dragon both look confused, but then they have an idea)

Princess: I know I can be a better dragon than you, Dragon.

I'd shake mountains with my roar!

Dragon: And I bet I could be a better princess than you, Princess.

Oh, it would be lovely. I could study the violin.

Princess & Dragon: (Deep in thought)

Dragon: I know, I'll be the Princess...

Princess: And I'll be the Dragon.

Princess & Dragon: Brilliant! (They shake hands)

* Song: To Change Places

Princess: You are sweet. Dragon: You are fierce.

Princess: You like music. Dragon: You like fight.

Princess: You like ballet. Dragon: You like chasing.

Princess: You behave like a princess. Dragon: You behave like a dragon.

Both: I can be better than you, Princess(Dragon).

Princess: Now, I can shake mountains with my roar.

Dragon: I play the violin with my eyes closed.

Both: That's great! It's a deal!!!

Narrator: They agreed to change places that very night.

Dragon: (Tiptoes off stage left with a pretty green and yellow basket singing)

A tisket, a tasket, a green and yellow basket....

Princess: (Shouts) Get going Greenie! This is my place now!

Scene 3 A New Princess at the Castle

(Nanny is laying the table. Dragon wanders onto the stage in a blue dress)

Narrator: And wasn't Nanny surprised the next morning?

(She drops some spoons)

Nanny: How lovely you look, Princess!

Dragon: Why, thank you, Nanny dear.

Narrator: The Dragon curtsied sweetly and wanted some powder for its nose!

King & Queen: (Enter and sit at table)

Dragon: Good morning. Isn't it a lovely day?

King & Queen: (Look surprised)

Dragon: Please pass the butter.

King & Queen: (Start to smile)

King: How polite you are Princess.

Queen: What perfect manners!

Narrator: The King and Queen were overjoyed and the Cook (Cook enters stage right) nearly dropped the Eggs Benedice when the Princess asked for more!

Dragon: Simply divine. May I have seconds please?

Narrator: From that time on, life was much more pleasant.

(All characters in the palace happily get ready for bed)

Princess: (Enters in the most frightening way possible)

Roar! Roar! Roar! Roar! Roar! Roar!

(Characters who are in bed put pillows over their heads to shut out the noise)

Narrator: No one really minded the Dragon's mean pranks.

(The characters in bed start to wake up smiling)

Old Knight: No one except me! I can't bear it!

I have to rescue the Princess whenever that terrible Dragon captures her!

Princess: (Creeps up on Dragon and captures it behind the Knight's back)

King & Queen: After that Dragon, Knight!

Old Knight: Oh no! Not again!

(Princess and Knight chase around the stage until Princess has the old Knight tied up)

Princess: When I roar, mountains shake!

Dragon: I play the violin with my eyes closed.

(Enters well-behaved children being very polite)

Narrtor: Now all the mothers and fathers in the kingdom told their children to behave just like the Princess, and of course, they did their best.....

(Music starts)

Narrator: But when they couldn't, they knew just the place to go.

All: To the Dragon's lair! (Loudly)

(Everybody starts dancing as music gets louder)

Dragon: What a racket! What a mess!

Princess: Isn't it wonderful?

Dragon: I have SUCH a headache.

* Song: It's good to behave

Dragon: If you learn to behave, to behave the way you should,

You can do the things that you ought to do, And still be someone special.

Princess: I don't want to behave, or be very, very good.

Dragon: Why not?

Princess: 'Cause I want to stay just the way I am, And I'll have much more fun.

All:If you learn to behave, to behave the way you should,

You can do the things that you ought to do, And still have lots of fun.

Princess: I will try to behave and be very, very good, But I'll stay the way that I want to be And still have lots of fun.

All: Well that's all up to you, you can choose what you must do. If you mind your manners, come when called,

You'll make others happy, too.

Dragon:If we want to have fun...

Princess:And pretend we're big and bold...

Dragon:We can rant and rave....

Princess:In our special cave...

Both:And still do what we're told.

But this Dragon wasn't fierce at all.
She could be a better Dragon then the Dragon.
They both had an idea.
I'll be the Princess.
